Sketchbook

Every sketch has a story. This one is one of my favorite. I was sitting in the ski hut at a miniature resort in,Ogden, drawing, while my companions played cards. I was too sick to enjoy myself. Recovering from a second bout of vertigo, I slept the entire weekend until now. As C and M played, an older man, who had markedly not lost his sense of adventure, came barreling through the entryway by which we sat. Seeing us, he turned his shoulders square to us, slapped the table top with a full hand, and pronounced, loud enough for the entire room to hear, "That is exactly how I learned to play rummy! Sitting here, at this booth, 32 years ago, with my ex-wife." A broad smile spread across his weathered face, and with that, he turned away and strode on.

Blast from the Past: T-shirt Design from 2009

I had the gumption to teach Illustrator to 7th graders. The cool thing is, the school created a Computer Graphics course 2 years later--So, those 7th graders could take the course this year. I resurrected a few of their old t-shirt designs today, and showed their work to the class. They were pretty embarrassed--shouldn't have been. Here's a few. I love them.

Artist: M

This was my favorite design, but the student left the school. Wish I had an after pic.

Artist: PK

This student was in the process of submitting his design to threadless.com when the bell rang, and he never finished. Since then, he's completed several t-shirt designs he is in the process of submitting. Two of his designs were accepted by Threadless judges, but didn't make the final cut. One is pictured below:

Artist: LS

This student created the Air Jordans word art we know and love.

Artist: TW

TW created the word art cat "Cat's Got Your Tongue?" that won first at the T City Art Show.

New Projects

I've got two projects I'd like to complete this summer. They're more collaborative than anything. As a kid, I would've hated this. But, I'm finding more often than not, that two heads are indeed better than one. My students, for one, are electrifyingly creative.

Project 1: Heroes and Villains: Collaborative Works with Children

I asked my nephew to draw a character on each page of my sketchbook using a black ball point pen. He could draw anything he wanted to--bad guys and good guys. He basically drew characters from video games and TV Series. It was fun to watch him work. Afterwards I asked him to tell me if each character had a name, where he/she was from, and whether or not they were a good guy or a bad guy.

Now here's the fun part--I get to used his images to create a Heroes and Villains battle/rescue scene.

It's going to be sweet.

More Awesome Word Art

Word Art

My student created this for an assignment in class. She created the image in Adobe Illustrator by overlapping words to create areas of value and color. When I assigned the project, I didn't expect much, because not even ocd me has the attention span for this kind of thing. The 9th graders blew me away! My jaw's still dropped. More to follow.
