The school is having a Valentine's day card contest. So, I'm way ahead of schedule this year. The computer graphics students are going to need time to make the coolest valentines you've ever seen. This is my example for the project. The winning valentines will be printed on nice paper and sold to students seeking a way to share some love.

Graphic Novels

We're working on graphic novels in my 8th grade Foundations II course. This is my class example. I'm way into this, and what's better? My students are blowing me away with their work. Photos of both mine and their finished work to follow.

Character Development Drawings (5 Drawings: Close Up, Full Body, Action (front), Action (back), Action (side))--as you can see I don't have time to finish my examples.

Rough Draft (Rules: Draw off the page, Black and white, 50/50)--Cut them apart and work out the sequence

Transfer to a nice piece of paper using light table, graphite powder, or transfer paper; Ink with sharpie, and add color with watercolor flat washes--I also photographed this and tweeked it on Photoshop. We may or may not do the last step in class.

For the student who isn't so visually inclined we read Robot Dreams by Sarah Varon; Wrote narrative for one chapter of the story; Interviewed the characters in Robot Dreams to get to know them; Created 10 interview questions for our own characters and interviewed them; Chose a story style (historical, fiction, myth, fairy-tale, personal experience, etc.); Mapped out our stories (Setting, Problem, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution); Cut apart Sarah's story and put it back together like a big ol' puzzle; Watched a video documentary on the life of a cartoonist; and, Read from this months edition of the Scholastic Art Magazine (which is stupendous and has a contest my students can enter their work in to win $200 worth of Prismacolor art supplies). It's been pretty labor intensive, but I think everything we did was worth it.

P.S. One of my fabulous 8th Graders already won a statewide art contest (Make Your Mark) earlier this year. So, my ego is successfully inflated, and I'm pretty sure I have at least 5 students whose novels could win this thing--for REAL.

I'm teaching Computer Graphics this year, as was suggested the year I was hired. It's been pretty fun so far. Right now we're learning various Photoshop skills. When we get real good, we're going to make some pretty snazzy stuff. For now, we're goofing around.
So here's my demo on using the selection tool, paint tool, and eraser.

While I whip these up during class demos, I really am thinking profound thoughts. This work is about how we think we know anything about love because we saw a movie once about a couple kids who thought they knew what love was too.

The opinion of kids matters most to me when I create these images. Reuben (age 5) says, "I don't really like this guy (referring to the drummer)--I don't really like him at all. But, I REALLY LIKE THIS GUY (referring to his hatted friend)--I really like him a lot." When asked why, he couldn't put his finger on it.

Painted this in college. The second still life I've ever painted. A far cry from the first which you can find an a previous post. Naturally German Expressionist--remember? This is naturally, a lot more representational. An accident really. I was using a smaller brush.

Flat? Outlined? Yes. Cassatt was my favorite artist at the time.

I thought this blurry photograph was all that remained; Then I found the preparatory sketches for the painting in an old sketchbook the other day. I might attempt to recreate this work this summer. Jewelry Box

This is new...3D Art. I created this sculpture while thinking of small hand-held trinkets--physical representations of memory. The drawer is modeled after those found in the jewelry box my late grandmother gave me--"a useful pot for keeping things". There's just something really great about an object that fits in your hands, and, something maddening about having to hang onto it, in a special place. It's ineffable, the connection I have to little things--little, special things: Acorns, Carousel Rings, Necklace Pendants, etc.

I found a baby squirrel alone one day. It was still without fur or opened eyes. I picked it up and took it in. It fit in the palm of my hand. I tried to nurse it back to health. I couldn't.

The Scribble Monster

I'm interested in the marks that little tiny people make--you know, like toddlers. These scribbles were produced by a toddler. Then I added a little something, transforming the work into a "monster"--which is what this toddler and I draw all the time anyway. I'd like to publish a book of illustrations that have started out as kid scribbles. I'll let you know when that happens.

The Forgotten Painting

This painting has been in the closet for three years...in a box, because I've never been satisfied. In fact, this is the digitally altered version of the painting...still not perfect, but 100,000 times better than the actual work. It was in "A World Without Art"--it was created for the Center Street show, but after years of trying to forget it, and altering it to fit another show (some Religious Art Scholarship show) I've forgotten both Titles and/or meanings and the scripture that inspired the alterations for the second version of the painting. What can I say? Sometimes you've got it. Sometimes you don't.

One of my students thinks this looks like a man with a Mardi Gras mask and a white wig. Maybe I can be satisfied with that.

This is my very first untrained attempt at realism.It was painted during a very stressful time in life and it's creation had me in tears on several occasions. I called my artist father for help. He said, over the line, "No matter how much you paint it, it still will only be paint on a canvas. It will never be a frog." I guess it's true. While I was finally satisfied with the image, it disappoints me that I did not give any thought to the subject. What was I thinking? As if I was designing Earth Day T-shirts for elementary school children.

Still Life

This still life intrigues me. I created it before I ever considered studying art. I took a beginner oil painting course, and, as beginner art courses at the university level go, I wasn't taught a thing--Not even, really, how to use the paint. Later I was shocked to find the similarities between this and early German Expressionism, and I am pleased with it's refreshing naivete. I agree with my seventh grader's interpretation of Picasso's work: He could paint like a master as a child, so he painted like a child as a master. That's what I need--I need to resurrect that fountain of unbridled creative expression. I need to scribble all over the walls of the upstairs hall to the bedrooms with crayon. I need to do it now.

Huge, blinding hair, that does just about everything: Cooks, cleans, and plays parachute. She inspired young cartoonists to create Ordinary Boy, Hot Girl, and Pregnant Lady.
